Text Editor Angst — More

Filed under: Journal — Norm @ 7:18 am

Lately I have been sticking with a carbon version of Emacs. It uses the .emacs file and has some nice “Apple keyboard goodness.” I do have some overall angst concerning the use of Emacs. It is quite BIG, maybe the word vast is more appropriate. I like this program, Smultron. It does spelling as I type (as you probably know, I NEED this) and real-time word count (which is good for 50 Word poems). The interface is a little crappy, but overall, it is nice. It is right up there with TextWrangler in terms of non-UN*X text editors.

Firefox Community Edition builds

A while ago I broke my copy of Safari (I did it to myself, I have no one else to blame). Since then, I have been using Firefox. I really like Firefox on Windows, but not so much on the Mac. (I prefer Galeon in Linux)

That is until I found this link. Now, I am not even sad that my Safari is broken.

Hipster PDA

43 Folders: Introducing the Hipster PDA

So, I made one of these. I tricked it out a little. I found some tabbed dividers for index cards that are made of a somewhat sturdy plastic. I cut the tabs off and made covers. I am also using a rubber band to hold the thing together.

I whipped up some calendar cards using InDesign and printed those out on my inkjet. Now it is a real PDA.

I plan on putting something up to describe my HPDA hacks as soon as I get some time.

Thanks Merlin!

Result and Report: The Mac OS X Expert Challenge — 2005.1

So. I entered this contest and came in last. :(

As a Macintosh professional, this type of thing is HUGELY interesting/important to me. We need to know that atttacks against this platform will be met with equal tenacity.

Thanks Amit.
